Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant wants no part in a training camp tradition of performing chores and errands for veterans, and has refused to carry the dead weight of WR Roy Williams. Bryant says he has too many other things to concern himself with as he goes through the process of adjusting to the NFL.

"No way I'm carrying his dead weight," said Bryant. "I'm here to play football, not carry the slack for some veteran. To be honest, I thought he was out of the league. Maybe that's why I refused so quickly."

Williams says he was just exposing his new teammate to a customary initiation program.

"We all do something. I did it back in the day," said Williams. "You get drafted, you do something for a veteran. If he doesn't participate, he'll go to step two. Not sure what that'll be at this point, but I may make him hold my old spot on the depth chart all season long. I'd still be the number one receiver of course. I'd just make him play more, catch more balls and deal with increased media attention. That oughta get my point across."

No matter the task he imposes on the rookie, Williams believes he may be the reason Bryant was brought to Dallas.

"I'm still gonna bust his chops, but bottom line, every young player needs a mentor. I can be that guy for Dez. Show him the ins and outs of playing receiver at this level. That kind of thing."

Head coach Wade Phillips says he doesn't know much about all that mentoring stuff, but agreed Bryant was drafted by the Cowboys because Roy Williams was on the team.
