The Winter Olympics have graciously decided to lend hockey players to the NHL for the next 47 months. Several experts wondered if hockey players would be allowed to play elsewhere while the Olympics are on hiatus, but due to the wildly successful gold medal game between the United States and Canada, the organizers of the games think it would be best if an attempt were made to maintain the popularity of Olympic hockey before the next tournament takes place in 2014.
"At first we were skeptical," said a member of the Olympic hockey committee, "But then we asked ourselves 'Does it help Olympic hockey if these players stay in the public eye?' And the answer was obviously yes. We researched several options to maintain this exposure and the NHL seemed like the best choice. Even though I think they only televise that one game that's played in the football stadium on New Year's. But at least that's better than nothing."
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is excited to add such popular Olympians as Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin to his league.
"We think the NHL is the perfect place to further the popularity of Olympic hockey and Olympic hockey stars. I just hope these players like it in our league, even though we don't give out medals. We just have this giant trophy-cup thing that everyone passes around. Maybe we could melt that thing down and make medals out of it so the Olympians feel more at home. I don't know. To be honest, I don't really know that much about hockey."
